Company History
Higher Technology Services (HTS) was founded in 1989. Originally focused on providing clinical engineering services to hospitals, developing custom software applications. Evolving over time, HTS sold the biomedical division in 1993, while HTS focused on computer software and networking technology.

Before Chattanooga Online, hobbyists used to connect to remote computer systems called BBSs (Bulletin Board Systems). BBSs allowed multiple home computer enthusiasts to connect to a single computer and share information, files and even chat. Although there are no pictures of the original BBS that eventually became Chattanooga Online, the image above shows what BBSs used to look like. |
HTS became the first internet provider in the region as Chattanooga Online in 1994. In the early days of Chattanooga Online an eight line BBS was running as a hobby on the first Linux system available (.9 kernel) with a fractional T1 for connectivity. Today, Chattanooga Online is one of the regions only ISPs to have multiple DS3 connections to the internet for the most reliable services available.
Chattanooga Online was originally planned as an automated telecommunications system for the few computer hobbyists that existed in the early days. What wasn't expected was the government pulling out of the internet and it exploding commercially.
Chattanooga Online quickly became the leader in the region as a full service Internet solutions provider. While almost all other internet providers in the region have come and gone or changed ownership several times, Chattanooga Online continues to be operated in the same location.
